How to choose your memory card?

   You have just purchased an advanced smartphone with a memory card reader. If the internal storage is 64 or 128 GB, acquiring the memory card is not an urgent matter. You still have what you see. But if storage space is limited to 16 GB, for example, capacity expansion is reasonable. Especially when you know that the operating system alone is already running several gigabytes, which reduces the available space. Then comes the dilemma of choosing a memory card. Capacity, brand, shape, and many standards come into play.

        The Shape

   First, remember that not all smart phones have a built-in memory card reader. Apple has chosen to exclude the entire iPhone domain. Some Android smart phone manufacturers do the same on high-end models. Today, all current smartphones that accept SD memory cards run micro SD format. Below are categories that vary by capacity. Micro SD cards with a capacity of 128 MB to 2 GB. Micro SDHC cards offer a capacity of 4 to 32 GB. Finally, Micro SDXC cards (Xtended capacity, extended capacity) have a maximum theoretical capacity of 2 terabytes.         Brand

   There are many exotic brands that offer memory cards at unbeatable prices. Without wanting to discredit their reputation, I recommend that you identify brands that have a storefront and whose products have been proven, and reliability is a key storage criterion. Even if there is no guaranteed brand, the failure rate stays much lower with brands such as Sandisk, Transcend, Kingston, Emtec and others. One point deserves special attention, it is not uncommon to find on exotic sites brand Samsung cards sold at very attractive prices. It is advisable to remain alert, and these pseudo-cases often fall into counterfeiting. You may end up with an unknown card and it will go down quickly, without recourse. Whenever possible, for card purchases, and trust in trusted sites, it's safer.

       Ability

   First thing to check, and agree to your smartphone. Some models do not even work on cards that have a maximum capacity of 32 GB, other 64GB or 128GB, and in top models such as the Samsung Galaxy S9 / S9 +, it goes up to 256 GB, while Sony smart phone tops accept theoretical capacity of up to 400GB. If you simply want to store some photos and videos that are systematically deleted after viewing, 32 or 64 GB will be more than enough. With 128 GB, you can keep all your discos in uncompressed format. Some sheet specifications announce support cards up to 2 terabytes, and this is more than marketing speech, and these cards are not available at the moment. Cards are 256 or 400 GB, which is fairly rare and relatively expensive, dedicated to the adult consumers of storage space, such as photographers or video photographers.

   Finally, if you choose a large capacity card, consider making a regular backup. Although these cards are more reliable these days, memory cards are likely to fail. To lose 32 GB of already painful memories, let me imagine what a 400 GB loss is! Think of it if for example for your holiday photos; planning two 64GB cards can be wiser than moving towards a 128GB card, and risk losing everything and then dividing it by 2!
